Zilker Nature Preserves
Austin Parks and Recreation

One can trace Texas’ rich history through the Zilker Park and the Zilker Nature Preserve. The Preserve is situated at the western edge of Zilker Park where Eanes Creek meets the Colorado River. Up until the 1830s this area was inhabited by many different groups of Native Americans. Nomadic Lipan Apaches and Tonkawas moved through during the 1400-1500s. Later, Kiowas and Comanches moved in throughout the 1700-1800s. While claimed by the Spanish Empire in the 1600s, no real European settlements were established in Central Texas until much later.

In 1821 Mexico gained independence from Spain and this area of Texas was among those vast Mexican land holdings. In the 1830s William Barton used the area of Zilker Park as cattle ranchland. In 1836 Texas won its independence from Mexico forming the Republic of Texas and in 1839 Waterloo (later changed to Austin) became the capital. Through the 1860s mills operated on Barton Creek. In the early 1900s the area was bought by Andrew Jackson Zilker. Zilker later sold the land to the City of Austin. The city worked with the Civil Works Administration to turn the area into a park. The area of the Zilker Nature Preserve was left to be a wilderness area for park goers to explore. Around 200 Civilian Conservation Corps workers built many structures that still stand today. Near the summit lookout of the Preserve the CCC built the Zilker Clubhouse and was used as a Boy Scout Cabin. The trail overlook structure was also built during this time. Two dams were built on Eanes Creek to catch water that flowed through there. One of these dams can be seen in images from this presentation near the creek and Mirror Pond. There was also a pistol range built into the hillside on the north end of the preserve.

The Austin Nature and Science Center was built in the 1960s on the eastern edge of the preserve. Except for some invasive plant management the preserve has remained untouched since then. The preserve is utilized by the Nature and Science Center as an outdoor exhibit and learning center. Come explore the trails of the Preserve and be a part of this rich history.

As Austin continues to grow, let's ensure that our parks, trails, and green spaces are protected and can be enjoyed for generations to come by practicing the Leave No Trace 7 Principles.
