We think understanding the underlying logic is key to being able to effectively leverage and tailor these strategies for a particular situation.

When you’re trying to get to know staff, it’s all about conversations. Why? Consider that organizations are really a group of people coming together and orienting around some common purpose. That means that to understand organizations, we want to consider more about what is happening when they organize (a process) than trying to study the organization (a thing). All that organizing? It happens in conversations of all kinds. Sure, you need the tangible and intangible resources and processes that aid in getting the work done, but they don’t mean much apart from the interaction that’s happening in conversation.

So, another way of thinking about engagement between civic design teams and city staff is a group of people organizing around a project to improve services for residents. Want better engagement? Seek to have better conversations. It can be easy to think of this as a tall order that’s pretty abstract. Where do you start? What do you say? How do you respond and adapt?
